Fellow Travelers and Lyric Opera

art really can sometimes make a real difference and I really believe that art can actually change people's lives and and teach and instruct and galvanize people so fellow travelers is a gorgeous piece of work that also serves as a call to action [Applause] Lyric Opera of Chicago and lyric unlimited decided to stage this work because they saw it in Cincinnati they recognize its importance and its beauty and they signed on to do it almost immediately after seeing it so I have a long history with Chicago and with this company and I'm so honored to be bringing this piece that means so much to me to Chicago audiences I think Chicago is gonna go absolutely crazy for it [Applause] well I why it means so much to me is that as an openly gay artist I'm getting recognized one with my very distinguished collaborators on this piece for telling the stories that are the same about the same thing that made me feel like an outsider when I was growing up and that that sometimes caused me some pain and then here Here I am at 40 doing work about our shared history and about the history of gay men and women in this country and it's it just feels like it was a real honor and it's also just galvanizing to be able to share our personal stories and if I could tell my 13 year old self and I'd be directing a piece about the witch hunt and gay men and women all over the country I never would have believed it so it's very personal for me and for all of us you
