Hugo Tilmouth, CEO of Chargedup, reveals his student startup journey supported by SETsquared Exeter.

Hi, my name is Hugo and I’m the founder
and CEO of ChargedUP. We’re solving the problem of
our phones just not lasting long enough. It’s something that we all face almost
on a daily basis. We have over a thousand locations where you can pick up a
battery and charge your phone on the go and the great thing is you can return it
anywhere in the network. The business was formed out of a project that myself and
Hakeem Buge completed while studying for our masters at Exeter University. We
found out about SETsquared through one of our lecturers that recommended that
we apply to allow us to do the MVP for our business. We then pitched to the
investors at SETsquared successfully and managed to get the funding to allow
us to do our first trial. This allowed us to take the project to the Royal
Cornwall show and validate the idea. After proving the concept at the
festival we were able to a win an award from Shell and O2 – which allowed us to
start development work on both the app and the hardware. Over the last two years
we’ve had some fantastic investors including the founders of Innocent
Smoothie, The Garage in Soho and Brent Hoberman’s Fund. When we first moved to London, we didn’t really know anyone so attending Joe Pearce’s events around
the capital really helped us expand our contact list. It’s been a big step for
the business taking a whole floor of a building on Shoreditch High Street, we’ve
been able to put our name on the door and a sign in the window and really make
the space our own, it’s been great for team morale.
We recently exhibited at the SETsquared Graduate Showcase in London, this was
fantastic for expanding our networks. To anyone thinking of getting involved with
SETsquared I would say just go for it you never really know what opportunities
could lie ahead.
